The hexagram represents<\/span> the sun rising over the earth.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

It is therefore the symbol<\/span> of rapid, easy progress,
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

which at the same time means<\/span>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

  • ever widening expansion<\/span> and
    \n<\/span><\/li>\n
  • clarity<\/span>.
    \n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

     <\/p>\n

    THE JUDGMENT
    \n<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

    PROGRESS.
    \n<\/span><\/p>\n

    The powerful prince
    \n<\/span><\/p>\n

    Is honored with horses in large numbers.
    \n<\/span><\/p>\n

    In a single day he is granted audience three times.
    \n<\/span><\/p>\n

    As an example of progress, this pictures<\/span> a time when
    \n<\/span><\/p>\n

    a powerful feudal lord
    \n<\/span><\/p>\n

      \n
    • rallies<\/span> the other lords around the sovereign and
      \n<\/span><\/li>\n
    • pledges<\/span> fealty and peace.
      \n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      The sovereign
      \n<\/span><\/p>\n

        \n
      • rewards<\/span> him richly and
        \n<\/span><\/li>\n
      • invites<\/span> him to a closer intimacy.
        \n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

        A twofold<\/span> idea is set forth here.
        \n<\/span><\/p>\n

          \n
        1. The actual effect of the progress emanates from a man
          \n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
            \n
          • who is in a dependent position and
            \n<\/span><\/li>\n
          • \n
            whom the others
            \n<\/span><\/div>\n
              \n
            • regard as their equal and
              \n<\/span><\/li>\n
            • are therefore willing to follow.
              \n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

              This leader has enough clarity of vision
              \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                \n
              • not to abuse his great influence
                \n<\/span><\/li>\n
              • but to use it rather for the benefit of his ruler.
                \n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
                  \n
                1. His ruler in turn
                  \n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
                    \n
                  • is free of all jealousy,
                    \n<\/span><\/li>\n
                  • showers presents on the great man, and
                    \n<\/span><\/li>\n
                  • invites him continually to his court.
                    \n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                    • An enlightened ruler and
                      \n<\/span><\/li>\n
                    • an obedient servant \u2013
                      \n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                      this is the condition on which great progress depends.<\/span>
                      \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                      THE IMAGE
                      \n<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

                      The sun rises over the earth: The image Of PROGRESS.
                      \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                      Thus the superior man himself
                      \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                      Brightens his bright virtue.<\/span>
                      \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                      The light<\/span> of the sun as it rises over the earth is by nature clear.
                      \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                      The higher the sun rises,
                      \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                      the more it emerges from the dark mists,
                      \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                      spreading the pristine purity of its rays over an ever widening area.
                      \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                      The real nature of man
                      \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                        \n
                      • is likewise originally good,
                        \n<\/span><\/li>\n
                      • \n
                        but it
                        \n<\/span><\/div>\n
                          \n
                        • becomes clouded by contact with earthly things and therefore
                          \n<\/span><\/li>\n
                        • needs purification before it can shine forth in its native clarity. 1<\/span>
                          \n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                           <\/p>\n

                          THE LINES
                          \n<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

                           <\/p>\n

                          Six in the second place means:
                          \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                          Progressing, but in sorrow.
                          \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                          Perseverance brings good fortune.
                          \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                          Then one obtains great happiness from one’s ancestries.
                          \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                          Progress is halted<\/span>;
                          \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                          an individual is kept from<\/span> getting in touch with
                          \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                          the man in authority with whom he has a connection.
                          \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                          When this happens,
                          \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                          he must remain persevering<\/span>, although he is grieved;
                          \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                          then with a maternal gentleness
                          \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                          the man in question will bestow<\/span> great happiness upon him.
                          \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                          This happiness
                          \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                            \n
                          • comes to him – and
                            \n<\/span><\/li>\n
                          • is well deserved \u2013
                            \n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                            because in this case
                            \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                            mutual attraction
                            \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                              \n
                            • does not rest on selfish or partisan motives
                              \n<\/span><\/li>\n
                            • but on firm and correct principles.
                              \n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                               <\/p>\n

                              Six in the third place means:
                              \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                              All are in accord.
                              \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                              Remorse disappears.
                              \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                              A man strives onward, in association with<\/span> others whose backing encourages him.
                              \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                              This dispels<\/span> any cause for regret over the fact that
                              \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                              he does not<\/span> have enough independence to triumph unaided over every hostile turn of fate.
                              \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                              \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                              Below\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0SUN\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0THE GENTLE, WIND, WOOD
                              \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                              1. The six lines construct the image<\/span> of Ting, THE CALDRON;
                                \n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
                                  \n
                                • at the bottom are the legs,
                                  \n<\/span><\/li>\n
                                • over them the belly,
                                  \n<\/span><\/li>\n
                                • then come the ears (handles), and
                                  \n<\/span><\/li>\n
                                • at the top the carrying rings.
                                  \n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                                  At the same time,
                                  \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                    \n
                                  1. the image<\/span> suggests the idea of nourishment<\/span>.
                                    \n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

                                    The Ting, cast of bronze, was the vessel that
                                    \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                    held the cooked viands
                                    \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                      \n
                                    • in the temple of the ancestors and
                                      \n<\/span><\/li>\n
                                    • at banquets.
                                      \n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                                      The head of the family served the food
                                      \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                      • from the Ting
                                        \n<\/span><\/li>\n
                                      • into the bowls of the guests.1
                                        \n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                                        THE WELL (48) likewise has the secondary meaning of
                                        \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                        giving nourishment, but rather more in relation to the people.
                                        \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                        The Ting, as a utensil pertaining to a refined civilization, suggests the
                                        \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                          \n
                                        • fostering and nourishing of able men, which
                                          \n<\/span><\/li>\n
                                        • redounded to the benefit of the state. (2)
                                          \n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
                                            \n
                                          • This hexagram and
                                            \n<\/span><\/li>\n
                                          • THE WELL
                                            \n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                                            are the only two in the Book of Changes that represent
                                            \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                              \n
                                            • concrete,
                                              \n<\/span><\/li>\n
                                            • man-made objects.
                                              \n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                                              Yet here too the thought has its abstract<\/span> connotation.
                                              \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                              • Sun, below, is wood and wind;
                                                \n<\/span><\/li>\n
                                              • Li, above, is flame.
                                                \n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                                                Thus together they<\/span> stand for the flame kindled by wood and wind,
                                                \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                                which likewise suggests the idea<\/span> of preparing food.
                                                \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                                Supreme good fortune.

                                                While
                                                \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                                THE WELL relates to
                                                \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                                  \n
                                                • the social foundation<\/span> of our life, and
                                                  \n<\/span><\/li>\n
                                                • this foundation is likened to
                                                  \n<\/span><\/li>\n
                                                • the water that serves to nourish growing wood,
                                                  \n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                                                  the present hexagram refers to
                                                  \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                                    \n
                                                  • the cultural superstructure<\/span> of society.
                                                    \n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                                                    Here
                                                    \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                                      \n
                                                    • it is the wood that serves as nourishment for the flame, the spirit<\/span>.
                                                      \n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                                                      All that is visible must
                                                      \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                                      • grow beyond itself,
                                                        \n<\/span><\/li>\n
                                                      • extend into the realm of the invisible.

                                                        Thereby

                                                        • receives its true consecration and clarity and

                                                        • takes firm root in the cosmic order.

                                                          Here
                                                          \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                                          we see civilization as it reaches its culmination in religion<\/span>.
                                                          \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                                          The Ting serves<\/span> in offering sacrifice to God.
                                                          \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                                          The highest earthly values must be sacrificed to the divine.<\/span>
                                                          \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                                          But
                                                          \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                                          the truly divine does not manifest itself apart from man.<\/span>
                                                          \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                                          The supreme revelation of God appears in
                                                          \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                                            \n
                                                          • prophets and
                                                            \n<\/span><\/li>\n
                                                          • holy men.
                                                            \n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                                                            To venerate them is true veneration of God.
                                                            \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                                            The will of God, as revealed through them, should be accepted in humility;
                                                            \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                                              \n
                                                            • this brings inner enlightenment and true understanding of the world, and
                                                              \n<\/span><\/li>\n
                                                            • this leads to great good fortune and success.
                                                              \n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                                                              • the fire burns above.

                                                                It is the same in human life;
                                                                \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                                                • there is in man likewise a fate that
                                                                  \n<\/span><\/li>\n
                                                                • lends power to his life.
                                                                  \n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                                                                  And if
                                                                  \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                                                    he succeeds in assigning the right place
                                                                    \n<\/span><\/div>\n

                                                                    • to fate,

                                                                      thus bringing the two into harmony,
                                                                      \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                                                      • he puts his fate on a firm footing.

                                                                        These words contain hints about the fostering of life
                                                                        \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                                                        as handed on by oral tradition in the secret teachings of Chinese yoga,
