Above\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0K’UN\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0THE RECEPTIVE, EARTH<\/p>\n

Below\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0TUI\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0THE JOYOUS, LAKE<\/p>\n

The Chinese word Lin has a range of meanings<\/span><\/p>\n

that is not exhausted<\/span> by any single word of another language.<\/p>\n

The ancient explanations in the Book of Changes give as its<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. first meaning, “becoming great.”<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
      \n
    • What becomes great<\/span> are the two strong lines growing into the hexagram from below;<\/li>\n
    • the light-giving power expands<\/span> with them.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
        \n
      1. \n
        The meaning is then further extended to include the concept of approach,<\/span><\/div>\n

        especially<\/span> the approach of<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

          \n
        • what is strong and highly placed<\/li>\n
        • in relation to<\/span> what is lower.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
            \n
          1. Finally the meaning includes<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
              \n
            • the attitude of condescension<\/span> of a man in high position toward the people,<\/li>\n
            • and in general the setting to work on affairs<\/span>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

              This hexagram is linked with the twelfth month (January-February),<\/p>\n

              when, after the winter solstice,<\/p>\n

              the light power begins to ascend again.<\/p>\n

               <\/p>\n

              THE JUDGMENT
              \n<\/strong><\/p>\n

              APPROACH has supreme success.<\/p>\n

              Perseverance furthers.<\/p>\n

              When the eighth month<\/span> comes,<\/p>\n

              There will be misfortune.<\/p>\n

              The hexagram as a whole points to a time of joyous, hopeful progress<\/span>.<\/p>\n

              Spring<\/span> is approaching.<\/p>\n

              Joy and forbearance bring high and low<\/span> nearer together.<\/p>\n

              Success<\/span> is certain.<\/p>\n

              But we must work with determination and perseverance<\/span><\/p>\n

              to make full use of the propitiousness<\/span> of the time.<\/p>\n

              And one thing more: spring does not last forever.<\/span><\/p>\n

              In the eighth month<\/span> the aspects are reversed<\/span>.<\/p>\n

              Then only two strong, light lines are left; these<\/p>\n

              • do not advance but
                \n<\/span><\/li>\n
              • are in retreat (see next hexagram).
                \n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                We must take heed of this change in good time.<\/span><\/p>\n

                  THE IMAGE

                  The earth above the lake: The image of APPROACH.<\/p>\n

                  Thus the superior man<\/p>\n

                  • is inexhaustible In his will to teach, And
                    \n<\/span><\/li>\n
                  • without limits In his tolerance and protection of the people.
                    \n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                    The earth borders upon<\/span> the lake from above 1.<\/p>\n

                    This symbolizes the approach and condescension of the man of higher position
                    \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                    to those beneath him.<\/span><\/p>\n

                    The two parts of the image indicate what his attitude<\/span> toward these people will be.<\/p>\n

                      Just as the lake is inexhaustible in depth,
                      \n<\/span><\/div>\n
                        \n
                      • so the sage is inexhaustible in his readiness to teach mankind,
                        \n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                        \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                          just as the earth is boundlessly wide, sustaining and caring for all creatures on it,

                          • so the sage sustains and cares for all people and excludes no part of humanity.

                            THE LINES
                            \n<\/strong><\/p>\n

                             <\/p>\n

                            0 Nine at the beginning means:
                            \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                            Joint approach.<\/p>\n

                            Perseverance brings good fortune.<\/p>\n

                            The good begins to prevail<\/span> and to find response<\/span> in influential circles.<\/p>\n

                            This in turn is an incentive<\/span> to men of ability.<\/p>\n

                            It is well to join this upward trend, but<\/p>\n

                              \n
                            • we must not let ourselves be carried away by the current of the time;
                              \n<\/span><\/li>\n
                            • we must adhere perseveringly to what is right.
                              \n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                              This brings good fortune.<\/p>\n

                              • When the stimulus to approach comes from a high place, and

                              • when a man has the inner strength and consistency that need no admonition,

                                Nor need the future cause any concern.<\/span><\/p>\n

                                He is well aware
                                \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                • that everything earthly is transitory, and

                                • that a descent follows upon every rise,

                                  but need not be confused by this universal law of fate.

                                  Everything serves to further.<\/span><\/p>\n

                                  Therefore<\/p>\n

                                  he will travel the paths of life

                                  • swiftly,
                                    \n<\/span><\/li>\n
                                  • honestly, and
                                    \n<\/span><\/li>\n
                                  • valiantly.

                                    Six in the fifth place means:
                                    \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                    Wise approach.<\/p>\n

                                    This is right for a great prince.<\/p>\n

                                    Good fortune.<\/p>\n

                                    A prince, or anyone in a leading position, must have
                                    \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                    the wisdom to attract to himself people of ability who are expert in directing affairs.<\/span><\/p>\n

                                    His wisdom consists both
                                    \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                      \n
                                    • in selecting the right people and
                                      \n<\/span><\/li>\n
                                    • in allowing those chosen to have a free hand without interference from him.
                                      \n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                                      For only through such self-restraint will he find
                                      \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                      the experts needed to satisfy all of his requirements.<\/span><\/p>\n

                                      Six at the top means:
                                      \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                      Greathearted approach.<\/p>\n

                                      Good fortune.<\/p>\n

                                      No blame.<\/p>\n

                                      A sage<\/p>\n

                                      • who has put the world behind<\/span> him and<\/li>\n
                                      • who in spirit has already withdrawn<\/span> from life may, under certain circumstances,<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                                          This means<\/span> great good fortune for the men whom he teaches and helps.<\/p>\n

                                          Below\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0K’UN\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0THE RECEPTIVE, EARTH<\/p>\n

                                          A slight variation of tonal stress gives the Chinese name for this hexagram a double meaning<\/span>.<\/p>\n

                                          It means both<\/span><\/p>\n

                                            \n
                                          • contemplating and
                                            \n<\/span><\/li>\n
                                          • being seen, in the sense of being an example.
                                            \n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                                            These ideas are suggested by the fact that the hexagram can be understood<\/span> as picturing a type of tower<\/span> characteristic of ancient China.<\/p>\n

                                              \n
                                            • \n
                                              A tower of this kind commanded<\/span> a wide view of the country;<\/div>\n

                                              at the same time, when situated on a mountain,<\/li>\n

                                            • it became a landmark<\/span> that could be seen for miles around.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                                              Thus the hexagram shows a ruler
                                              \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                                \n
                                              • who contemplates the law of heaven above him and the ways of the people below, and

                                              • who, by means of good government, sets a lofty example to the masses.

                                                This hexagram is linked with the eighth month (September – October).<\/p>\n

                                                • the dark power is again on the increase.

                                                  CONTEMPLATION.<\/p>\n

                                                  • The ablution has been made,<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                                                      Full of trust they look up to him.<\/p>\n

                                                      The sacrificial ritual<\/span> in China began with<\/p>\n

                                                      • an ablution and<\/li>\n
                                                      • a libation by which the Deity was invoked,<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                                                        after which the sacrifice was offered.<\/p>\n

                                                        The moment of time between these two ceremonies is the most sacred of all,
                                                        \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                                        the moment of deepest inner concentration.<\/span><\/p>\n

                                                        If piety is
                                                        \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                                          \n
                                                        • sincere and
                                                          \n<\/span><\/li>\n
                                                        • expressive of real faith,
                                                          \n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                                                          the contemplation of it has a transforming and awe-inspiring effect
                                                          \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                                          on those who witness it.<\/span><\/p>\n

                                                          Thus also in nature<\/span><\/p>\n

                                                          a holy seriousness<\/span> is to be seen in the fact that<\/p>\n

                                                          natural occurrences are uniformly subject to law.<\/span><\/p>\n

                                                          Contemplation of the divine meaning underlying the workings of the universe gives
                                                          \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                                          to the man who is called upon to influence others
                                                          \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                                          the means of producing like effects.<\/span><\/p>\n

                                                          This requires that power of inner concentration<\/span> which religious contemplation<\/span><\/p>\n

                                                          develops<\/span> in great men<\/span> strong in faith.<\/p>\n

                                                            \n
                                                          • \n
                                                            It enables them to apprehend the mysterious and divine laws of life, and
                                                            \n<\/span><\/div>\n

                                                            by means of profoundest inner concentration
                                                            \n<\/span><\/li>\n

                                                          • they give expression to these laws in their own persons.
                                                            \n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                                                            Thus<\/p>\n

                                                            a hidden spiritual power emanates from them,
                                                            \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                                            influencing and dominating others
                                                            \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                                            without their being aware of how it happens.<\/span><\/p>\n

                                                             <\/p>\n

                                                            THE IMAGE

                                                            The wind blows over the earth: The image of CONTEMPLATION.<\/p>\n

                                                            Thus the kings of old<\/p>\n

                                                              \n
                                                            • visited the regions of the world,<\/li>\n
                                                            • Contemplated the people, And<\/li>\n
                                                            • gave them instruction.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                                                              When the wind blows over the earth it<\/p>\n

                                                                \n
                                                              • goes far and wide and<\/li>\n
                                                              • the grass must bend<\/span> to its power.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                                                                These two occurrences<\/span> find confirmation in the hexagram.<\/p>\n

                                                                The two images are used to symbolize a practice<\/span> of the kings of old;<\/p>\n

                                                                  \n
                                                                1. \n
                                                                  in making regular journeys<\/span> the ruler could, in the first place,<\/div>\n

                                                                  survey<\/span> his realm and<\/p>\n

                                                                  make certain that none of the existing usages<\/span> of the people escaped notice;<\/li>\n

                                                                  in the second,<\/div>\n

                                                                  he could exert influence<\/span> through which such customs as were unsuitable<\/span><\/p>\n

                                                                  could be changed<\/span>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

                                                                  All of this points to the power possessed by a superior personality.<\/span><\/p>\n

                                                                    On the one hand, such a man<\/div>\n
