Above\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0K’AN\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0THE ABYSMAL, WATER<\/p>\n

Below\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0K’UN\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0THE RECEPTIVE, EARTH<\/p>\n

The waters on the surface of the earth flow together<\/span> wherever they can,<\/p>\n

as for example in the ocean,<\/p>\n

where all the rivers come together.<\/p>\n

Symbolically this connotes<\/p>\n

    \n
  • holding together and
    \n<\/span><\/li>\n
  • the laws that regulate it.
    \n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    The same idea is suggested by the fact that<\/p>\n

    all the lines of the hexagram except<\/span> the fifth, the place of the ruler, are yielding<\/span>.<\/p>\n

    The yielding lines hold together because they are influenced by<\/p>\n

      \n
    • a man of strong will<\/span> in the leading position,
      \n<\/span><\/li>\n
    • a man who is their center<\/span> of union.
      \n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      Moreover, this strong and guiding personality in turn holds together<\/span> with the others,<\/p>\n

      finding in them the complement<\/span> of his own nature.<\/p>\n

      THE JUDGMENT
      \n<\/strong><\/p>\n

      HOLDING TOGETHER brings good fortune.<\/p>\n

      Inquire of the oracle once again<\/p>\n

      Whether you possess sublimity, constancy, and perseverance<\/span>;<\/p>\n

      Then there is no blame.<\/p>\n

      Those who are uncertain gradually join.<\/p>\n

      Whoever comes too late<\/p>\n

      Meets with misfortune.<\/p>\n

      What is required is that we unite with others<\/span>, in order that<\/p>\n

      all may complement and aid<\/span> one another through holding together.<\/p>\n

      But such holding together calls for a central figure<\/span> around whom other persons may unite.<\/p>\n

      To become a center of influence holding people together is a<\/p>\n

        \n
      • grave matter<\/span> and
        \n<\/span><\/li>\n
      • fraught with great responsibility<\/span>.
        \n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

        It requires<\/p>\n

          \n
        • greatness of spirit,
          \n<\/span><\/li>\n
        • consistency, and
          \n<\/span><\/li>\n
        • strength.
          \n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

          Therefore let him who wishes to gather others about him ask himself<\/span> whether he is equal to the undertaking,<\/p>\n

          for anyone attempting the task without a real calling for it<\/span><\/p>\n

          only makes confusion worse than<\/span> if no union at all had taken place.<\/p>\n

          But when there is a real rallying point<\/span>,<\/p>\n

          those who at first are hesitant or uncertain gradually come in of their own accord<\/span>.<\/p>\n

          Late-comers must suffer the consequences<\/span>, for in holding together the question of the right time is also important.<\/p>\n

          Relationships are formed and firmly established according to definite inner laws.<\/span><\/p>\n

          Common experiences<\/span> strengthen these ties, and he who comes too late to share in these basic experiences must suffer for it if, as a straggler, he finds the door locked<\/span>.<\/p>\n

          If a man

          • does not feel strong enough to function as the center,

                The social organization of ancient China was based on this principle of the holding together of<\/p>\n

                • rulers.

                  Water flows to unite with water, because all parts of it are subject to the same laws.<\/span><\/p>\n

                  So too should human society hold together<\/span> through a community of interests that<\/p>\n

                  allows<\/span> each individual to feel himself a member of a whole.<\/p>\n

                  The central power of a social organization must see to it that
                  \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                  every member finds that his true interest lies in holding together with it,<\/span><\/p>\n
