  1. The six lines construct the image<\/span> of Ting, THE CALDRON;
    \n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
      \n
    • at the bottom are the legs,
      \n<\/span><\/li>\n
    • over them the belly,
      \n<\/span><\/li>\n
    • then come the ears (handles), and
      \n<\/span><\/li>\n
    • at the top the carrying rings.
      \n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      At the same time,
      \n<\/span><\/p>\n

        \n
      1. the image<\/span> suggests the idea of nourishment<\/span>.
        \n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

        The Ting, cast of bronze, was the vessel that
        \n<\/span><\/p>\n

        held the cooked viands
        \n<\/span><\/p>\n

          \n
        • in the temple of the ancestors and
          \n<\/span><\/li>\n
        • at banquets.
          \n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

          The head of the family served the food
          \n<\/span><\/p>\n

            \n
          • from the Ting
            \n<\/span><\/li>\n
          • into the bowls of the guests.1
            \n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

            THE WELL (48) likewise has the secondary meaning of
            \n<\/span><\/p>\n

            giving nourishment, but rather more in relation to the people.
            \n<\/span><\/p>\n

            The Ting, as a utensil pertaining to a refined civilization, suggests the
            \n<\/span><\/p>\n

              \n
            • fostering and nourishing of able men, which
              \n<\/span><\/li>\n
            • redounded to the benefit of the state. (2)
              \n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
                \n
              • This hexagram and
                \n<\/span><\/li>\n
              • THE WELL
                \n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                are the only two in the Book of Changes that represent
                \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                  \n
                • concrete,
                  \n<\/span><\/li>\n
                • man-made objects.
                  \n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                  Yet here too the thought has its abstract<\/span> connotation.
                  \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                  • Sun, below, is wood and wind;
                    \n<\/span><\/li>\n
                  • Li, above, is flame.
                    \n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                    Thus together they<\/span> stand for the flame kindled by wood and wind,
                    \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                    which likewise suggests the idea<\/span> of preparing food.
                    \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                    THE JUDGMENT
                    \n<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

                    THE CALDRON.

                    Supreme good fortune.
                    \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                    Success.

                    While
                    \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                    THE WELL relates to
                    \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                      \n
                    • the social foundation<\/span> of our life, and
                      \n<\/span><\/li>\n
                    • this foundation is likened to
                      \n<\/span><\/li>\n
                    • the water that serves to nourish growing wood,
                      \n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                      the present hexagram refers to
                      \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                        \n
                      • the cultural superstructure<\/span> of society.
                        \n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                        Here
                        \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                          \n
                        • it is the wood that serves as nourishment for the flame, the spirit<\/span>.
                          \n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                          All that is visible must
                          \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                          • grow beyond itself,
                            \n<\/span><\/li>\n
                          • extend into the realm of the invisible.
                            \n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                            Thereby
                            \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                            it

                            • receives its true consecration and clarity and
                              \n<\/span><\/li>\n
                            • takes firm root in the cosmic order.

                              Here
                              \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                              we see civilization as it reaches its culmination in religion<\/span>.
                              \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                              The Ting serves<\/span> in offering sacrifice to God.
                              \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                              The highest earthly values must be sacrificed to the divine.<\/span>
                              \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                              But
                              \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                              the truly divine does not manifest itself apart from man.<\/span>
                              \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                              The supreme revelation of God appears in
                              \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                \n
                              • prophets and
                                \n<\/span><\/li>\n
                              • holy men.
                                \n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                                To venerate them is true veneration of God.
                                \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                The will of God, as revealed through them, should be accepted in humility;
                                \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                  \n
                                • this brings inner enlightenment and true understanding of the world, and
                                  \n<\/span><\/li>\n
                                • this leads to great good fortune and success.
                                  \n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                                  consolidates his fate

                                  By making his position correct.<\/span>

                                  The fate of fire depends on wood;
                                  \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                    \n
                                  • as long as there is wood below,
                                    \n<\/span><\/li>\n
                                  • the fire burns above.
                                    \n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                                    It is the same in human life;
                                    \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                      \n
                                    • there is in man likewise a fate that
                                      \n<\/span><\/li>\n
                                    • lends power to his life.
                                      \n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                                      And if
                                      \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                        \n
                                      • \n
                                        he succeeds in assigning the right place
                                        \n<\/span><\/div>\n
                                          \n
                                        • to life and
                                          \n<\/span><\/li>\n
                                        • to fate,
                                          \n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                                          thus bringing the two into harmony,
                                          \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                            \n
                                          • he puts his fate on a firm footing.
                                            \n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                                            These words contain hints about the fostering of life
                                            \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                            as handed on by oral tradition in the secret teachings of Chinese yoga,
                                            \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                             <\/p>\n

                                            THE LINES
                                            \n<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

                                             <\/p>\n

                                            Six at the beginning means:
                                            \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                            A Ting with legs upturned.
                                            \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                            Furthers removal of stagnating stuff.
                                            \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                            One takes a concubine for the sake of her son.
                                            \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                            No blame.
                                            \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                              \n
                                            • If a Ting is turned upside down before being used,
                                              \n<\/span><\/li>\n
                                            • no harm is done \u2013
                                              \n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                                              on the contrary,
                                              \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                                \n
                                              • this clears it of refuse.
                                                \n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                                                A concubine’s position is lowly,
                                                \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                                but because she has a son
                                                \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                                she comes to be honored.
                                                \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                                These two metaphors express the idea that in a highly developed civilization,
                                                \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                                such as that indicated by this hexagram,
                                                \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                                every person of good will can in some way or other succeed.<\/span>
                                                \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                                No matter how lowly he may be, provided
                                                \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                                  \n
                                                • he is ready to purify himself,
                                                  \n<\/span><\/li>\n
                                                • he is accepted.
                                                  \n<\/span><\/li>\n
                                                • He attains a station in which
                                                  \n<\/span><\/li>\n
                                                • he can prove himself fruitful in accomplishment, and as a result
                                                  \n<\/span><\/li>\n
                                                • he gains recognition.
                                                  \n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                                                   <\/p>\n

                                                  Nine in the fourth place means:
                                                  \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                                  The legs of the Ting are broken.
                                                  \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                                    \n
                                                  • The prince’s meal is spilled And
                                                    \n<\/span><\/li>\n
                                                  • his person is soiled.
                                                    \n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                                                    Misfortune.
                                                    \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                                    A man has a difficult and responsible task to which he is not adequate.
                                                    \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                                    Moreover,
                                                    \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                                    he
                                                    \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                                      \n
                                                    • does not devote himself to it with all his strength but
                                                      \n<\/span><\/li>\n
                                                    • goes about with inferior people;
                                                      \n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                                                      therefore
                                                      \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                                      the execution of the work fails.
                                                      \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                                      In this way he also incurs personal opprobrium.<\/span>
                                                      \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                                      Confucius says about this line:<\/span>
                                                      \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                                        \n
                                                      • “Weak character coupled with honored place,
                                                        \n<\/span><\/li>\n
                                                      • meager knowledge with large plans,
                                                        \n<\/span><\/li>\n
                                                      • limited powers with heavy responsibility,
                                                        \n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                                                        will seldom escape disaster.”
                                                        \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                                         <\/p>\n

                                                        Nine at the top means:
                                                        \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                                        The Ting has rings of jade.
                                                        \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                                        Great good fortune.
                                                        \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                                        Nothing that would not act to further.
                                                        \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                                        In the preceding line
                                                        \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                                          \n
                                                        • the carrying rings are described as golden<\/span>, to denote their strength<\/span>;
                                                          \n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                                                          here

                                                          • they are said to be of jade<\/span>.

                                                            Jade is notable for its combination of hardness with soft luster<\/span>.

                                                            This counsel, in relation to the man who is open to it,
                                                            \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                                            • works greatly to his advantage<\/span>.
                                                              \n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                                                              Here
                                                              \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                                                \n
                                                              • the counsel is described in relation to<\/span> the sage who imparts it.
                                                                \n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                                                                In imparting it,
                                                                \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                                                  \n
                                                                • he will be mild and pure, like precious jade.
                                                                  \n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                                                                  the work finds favor in the eyes of the Deity, who

                                                                      the forces of nature prepare the new spring.

                                                                        This hexagram denotes a time in nature when heaven seems to be on earth.<\/span>

                                                                        Heaven has placed itself beneath<\/span> the earth, and so their powers unite<\/span> in deep harmony.

                                                                        Then peace and blessing descend<\/span> upon all living things.

                                                                                              Heaven and earth are in contact<\/span> and combine<\/span> their influences,

                                                                                              producing<\/span> a time of universal flowering and prosperity.

                                                                                              This stream of energy must be regulated<\/span> by the ruler of men.

                                                                                              It is done by a process of division<\/span>.

                                                                                              • divide the uniform flow of time into the seasons, according to the succession of natural phenomena, and

                                                                                                nature in its overwhelming profusion<\/span> of phenomena is

                                                                                                  On the other hand,

                                                                                                  This is done by adjusting the products to
