    The trigram Tui denotes<\/span> the youngest daughter;
    \n<\/span><\/p>\n

    it is symbolized<\/span> by the smiling lake, and
    \n<\/span><\/p>\n

    its attribute<\/span> is joyousness.
    \n<\/span><\/p>\n

    Contrary to appearances,
    \n<\/span><\/p>\n

    • it is not the yielding quality of the top line that accounts for joy here.
      \n<\/span><\/li>\n

      The attribute of the yielding or dark principle is

      • not joy

                                                                                The upper trigram K’un is characterized<\/span> by devotion;

                                                                                thus the movement is natural,<\/span>
                                                                                \narising<\/span> spontaneously.

                                                                                For this reason the transformation<\/span> of the old becomes easy.

                                                                                • The old is discarded and
                                                                                  \n<\/span><\/li>\n
                                                                                • the new is introduced.<\/span>

                                                                                                  The winter solstice has always been celebrated in China as the resting time<\/span> of the year \u2013

                                                                                                  a custom<\/span> that survives in the time of rest observed at the new year.

                                                                                                  In winter the life energy, symbolized by thunder, the Arousing is still underground.

                                                                                                  Movement is just at its beginning<\/span>;
                                                                                                  \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                                                                                  therefore
                                                                                                  \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                                                                                  it must be strengthened<\/span> by rest,
                                                                                                  \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                                                                                  so that it will not be dissipated<\/span> by being used prematurely.
                                                                                                  \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                                                                                  This principle, i.e., of allowing energy that is renewing itself to be reinforced by rest,
                                                                                                  \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                                                                                  applies to all similar situations.<\/span>

                                                                                                  • The return of health after illness,
                                                                                                    \n<\/span><\/li>\n
                                                                                                  • the return of understanding after an estrangement:

                                                                                                    everything must be treated<\/span> tenderly and with care at the beginning,
