HEXAGRAM 24 \u2013 Fu – Return (The Turning Point)

Above\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0K’UN\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0THE RECEPTIVE, EARTH
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

Below\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0CHEN\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0THE AROUSING, THUNDER
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

The idea<\/span> of a turning point arises from
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

the fact that
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

    \n
  • after the dark lines have pushed<\/span> all of the light lines upward and out of the hexagram,
    \n<\/span><\/li>\n
  • another light line enters<\/span> the hexagram from below.
    \n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    The time of darkness is past.<\/span>
    \n<\/span><\/p>\n

    The winter solstice brings the victory of light.<\/span>
    \n<\/span><\/p>\n

    This hexagram is linked with<\/span> the eleventh month,
    \n<\/span><\/p>\n

    the month of the solstice<\/span> (December-January).
    \n<\/span><\/p>\n

    THE JUDGMENT
    \n<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

    RETURN. Success.
    \n<\/span><\/p>\n

      \n
    • Going out and coming in without error.
      \n<\/span><\/li>\n
    • Friends come without blame.
      \n<\/span><\/li>\n
    • To and fro goes the way.
      \n<\/span><\/li>\n
    • On the seventh day comes return.
      \n<\/span><\/li>\n
    • It furthers one to have somewhere to go.
      \n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      After a time of decay comes the turning point.<\/span>
      \n<\/span><\/p>\n

      The powerful light that has been banished returns.<\/span>
      \n<\/span><\/p>\n

      There is movement<\/span>, but
      \n<\/span><\/p>\n

      it is not<\/span> brought about by force.
      \n<\/span><\/p>\n

      The upper trigram K’un is characterized<\/span> by devotion;
      \n<\/span><\/p>\n

      thus the movement is natural,<\/span>
      \narising<\/span> spontaneously.
      \n<\/span><\/p>\n

      For this reason the transformation<\/span> of the old becomes easy.
      \n<\/span><\/p>\n

        \n
      • The old is discarded and
        \n<\/span><\/li>\n
      • the new is introduced.<\/span>
        \n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

        Both measures accord<\/span> with the time;
        \n<\/span><\/p>\n

        therefore no harm<\/span> results.
        \n<\/span><\/p>\n

        Societies of people sharing the same views are formed.<\/span>
        \n<\/span><\/p>\n

        But since these groups
        \n<\/span><\/p>\n

          \n
        • come together in full public knowledge and
          \n<\/span><\/li>\n
        • are in harmony with the time,
          \n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
            \n
          • all selfish separatist tendencies are excluded, and
            \n<\/span><\/li>\n
          • no mistake is made.
            \n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

            The idea of RETURN is based on the course of nature.
            \n<\/span><\/p>\n

              \n
            • The movement is cyclic, and
              \n<\/span><\/li>\n
            • the course completes itself.<\/span>
              \n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

              Therefore
              \n<\/span><\/p>\n

              it is not necessary to hasten anything artificially.<\/span>
              \n<\/span><\/p>\n

              Everything comes of itself at the appointed time.<\/span>
              \n<\/span><\/p>\n

              This is the meaning<\/span> of heaven and earth.
              \n<\/span><\/p>\n

              All movements are accomplished in six stages, and
              \n<\/span><\/p>\n

              the seventh brings return.<\/span>
              \n<\/span><\/p>\n

              Thus
              \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                \n
              • \n
                the Winter solstice, with which the decline<\/span> of the year begins,
                \n<\/span><\/div>\n
                  \n
                • comes<\/span> in the seventh month after the summer solstice;
                  \n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                  so too
                  \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                    \n
                  • \n
                    sunrise
                    \n<\/span><\/div>\n
                      \n
                    • comes<\/span> in the seventh double hour after sunset<\/span>.
                      \n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                      Therefore
                      \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                      seven<\/span> is the number of the young light, and
                      \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                      it arises<\/span> when six, the number of the great darkness, is increased by one.
                      \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                      In this way
                      \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                      the state of rest gives place to movement.<\/span>
                      \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                       <\/p>\n

                      THE IMAGE
                      \n<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

                      Thunder within the earth: The image of THE TURNING POINT.
                      \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                      Thus
                      \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                        \n
                      • the kings of antiquity closed the passes At the time of solstice.
                        \n<\/span><\/li>\n
                      • Merchants and strangers did not go about, And
                        \n<\/span><\/li>\n
                      • the ruler Did not travel through the provinces.
                        \n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                        The winter solstice has always been celebrated in China as the resting time<\/span> of the year \u2013
                        \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                        a custom<\/span> that survives in the time of rest observed at the new year.
                        \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                        In winter the life energy, symbolized by thunder, the Arousing is still underground.
                        \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                        Movement is just at its beginning<\/span>;
                        \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                        therefore
                        \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                        it must be strengthened<\/span> by rest,
                        \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                        so that it will not be dissipated<\/span> by being used prematurely.
                        \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                        This principle, i.e., of allowing energy that is renewing itself to be reinforced by rest,
                        \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                        applies to all similar situations.<\/span>
                        \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                          \n
                        • The return of health after illness,
                          \n<\/span><\/li>\n
                        • the return of understanding after an estrangement:
                          \n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                          everything must be treated<\/span> tenderly and with care at the beginning,
                          \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                          so that the return may lead to<\/span> a flowering.
                          \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                           <\/p>\n

                          THE LINES
                          \n<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

                           <\/p>\n

                          0 Nine at the beginning means:
                          \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                          Return from a short distance.
                          \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                          No need for remorse
                          \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                          Great good fortune.
                          \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                          Slight digressions<\/span> from the good cannot be avoided, but
                          \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                          one must turn back in time<\/span>, before going too far.
                          \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                          This is especially important in the development of character;<\/span>
                          \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                          every faintly evil thought must be put aside immediately, before it
                          \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                            \n
                          • goes too far and
                            \n<\/span><\/li>\n
                          • takes root in the mind.<\/span>
                            \n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                            Then
                            \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                              \n
                            • there is no cause for remorse, and
                              \n<\/span><\/li>\n
                            • all goes well.
                              \n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                              Six in the second place means:
                              \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                              Quiet return.
                              \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                              Good fortune.
                              \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                              Return always
                              \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                \n
                              • calls for a decision and
                                \n<\/span><\/li>\n
                              • is an act of self-mastery.
                                \n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                                It is made easier if a man is in good company.
                                \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                If
                                \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                he can
                                \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                  \n
                                • bring himself to put aside pride and
                                  \n<\/span><\/li>\n
                                • follow the example of good men,
                                  \n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                                  good fortune results.<\/span>
                                  \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                  Six in the fourth place means:
                                  \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                  Walking in the midst of others,
                                  \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                  One returns alone.
                                  \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                  A man
                                  \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                    \n
                                  • is in a society composed of inferior people, but
                                    \n<\/span><\/li>\n
                                  • \n
                                    is connected spiritually with a strong and good friend, and
                                    \n<\/span><\/div>\n

                                    this makes him turn back alone.
                                    \n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                                    Although nothing<\/span> is said of reward and punishment,
                                    \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                    this return is certainly favorable<\/span>,
                                    \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                    for such a resolve to choose the good brings<\/span> its own reward.
                                    \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                    Six at the top means:
                                    \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                    Missing the return. Misfortune.
                                    \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                      \n
                                    • Misfortune from within and without.
                                      \n<\/span><\/li>\n
                                    • \n
                                      If armies are set marching in this way,
                                      \n<\/span><\/div>\n

                                      One will in the end suffer a great defeat,
                                      \n<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n

                                    • Disastrous for the ruler of the country.
                                      \n<\/span><\/li>\n
                                    • For ten years It will not be possible to attack again.
                                      \n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                                      If
                                      \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                        \n
                                      • a man misses the right time for return,
                                        \n<\/span><\/li>\n
                                      • he meets with misfortune.<\/span>
                                        \n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                                        The misfortune has its inner cause in a wrong attitude toward the world.
                                        \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                        The misfortune coming upon him from without results from this wrong attitude.
                                        \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                        What is pictured here is
                                        \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                          \n
                                        • blind obstinacy and
                                          \n<\/span><\/li>\n
                                        • the judgment that is visited upon it.<\/span>
                                          \n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                                          MOVING HEXAGRAM

                                          HEXAGRAM 64 – Wei Chi – Before Completion

                                          Above\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Li\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0THE CLINGING, FLAME
                                          \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                          Below\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0K’AN\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0THE ABYSMAL, WATER
                                          \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                          This hexagram indicates a time when
                                          \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                          the transition from disorder to order is not yet completed.<\/span>
                                          \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                          The change is indeed prepared for,
                                          \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                          since
                                          \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                          all the lines in the upper trigram are in relation to those in the lower (1).
                                          \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                          However,
                                          \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                          they are not yet<\/span> in their places.
                                          \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                          While
                                          \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                            the preceding hexagram offers an analogy to autumn,<\/span>
                                            \n<\/span><\/div>\n

                                              which forms the transition
                                              \n<\/span><\/div>\n

                                              from summer to winter,
                                              \n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n

                                            • \n
                                              this hexagram presents a parallel to spring,<\/span>
                                              \n<\/span><\/div>\n
                                                \n
                                              • \n
                                                which leads out of winter’s stagnation into
                                                \n<\/span><\/div>\n

                                                the fruitful time of summer.
                                                \n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                                                With this hopeful outlook the Book of Changes comes to its close.<\/span>
                                                \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                                THE JUDGMENT

                                                BEFORE COMPLETION.
                                                \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                                Success.
                                                \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                                But if the little fox, after nearly completing the crossing,
                                                \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                                Gets his tail in the water,
                                                \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                                There is nothing that would further.
                                                \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                                The conditions are difficult.
                                                \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                                The task is great and full of responsibility.
                                                \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                                It is nothing less than that of
                                                \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                                leading the world out of confusion back to order.
                                                \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                                But
                                                \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                                it is a task that promises success<\/span>,
                                                \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                                because
                                                \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                                there is a goal that can unite the<\/span> forces now tending in different directions.
                                                \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                                At first, however,
                                                \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                                one must move warily<\/span>, like an old fox walking over ice.
                                                \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                                The caution of a fox walking over ice is proverbial in China.
                                                \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                                His ears are constantly alert to the cracking of the ice,
                                                \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                                as
                                                \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                                he carefully and circumspectly searches out the safest spots.
                                                \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                                A young fox who as yet has not acquired this caution
                                                \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                                goes ahead boldly,
                                                \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                                and it may happen that
                                                \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                                he falls in and gets his tail wet
                                                \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                                when
                                                \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                                he is almost across the water.
                                                \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                                Then of course
                                                \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                                his effort has been all in vain.
                                                \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                                Accordingly, in times “before completion,”
                                                \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                                  \n
                                                • deliberation
                                                  \n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                                                  and
                                                  \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                                    \n
                                                  • caution
                                                    \n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                                                    are the prerequisites of success.<\/span>

                                                        • take opposite directions
                                                          \n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                                                          • remain unrelated.

                                                            If
                                                            \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                                            • we wish to achieve an effect,

                                                              we must first

                                                                investigate the nature of the forces in question
                                                                \n<\/span><\/div>\n

                                                                and

                                                              • ascertain their proper place.

                                                                If
                                                                \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                                                  we can bring these forces to bear in the right place,

                                                                  • they will have the desired effect,
                                                                    \n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                                                                      \n
                                                                    • completion will be achieved.

                                                                      But in order to handle external forces properly,
                                                                      \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                                                        we must above all arrive at the correct standpoint ourselves,
                                                                        \n<\/span><\/div>\n

                                                                        for only from this vantage can we work correctly.<\/span>
                                                                        \n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
