\n<\/span><\/p>\n

Below\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0TUI\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0THE JOYOUS, LAKE
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

The Chinese word Lin has a range of meanings<\/span>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

that is not exhausted<\/span> by any single word of another language.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

The ancient explanations in the Book of Changes give as its
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

    \n
  1. first meaning, “becoming great.”<\/span>
    \n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
      \n
    • What becomes great<\/span> are the two strong lines growing into the hexagram from below;
      \n<\/span><\/li>\n
    • the light-giving power expands<\/span> with them.
      \n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
        \n
      1. \n
        The meaning is then further extended to include the concept of approach,<\/span>
        \n<\/span><\/div>\n

        especially<\/span> the approach of
        \n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

          \n
        • what is strong and highly placed
          \n<\/span><\/li>\n
        • in relation to<\/span> what is lower.
          \n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
            \n
          1. Finally the meaning includes
            \n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
              \n
            • the attitude of condescension<\/span> of a man in high position toward the people,
              \n<\/span><\/li>\n
            • and in general the setting to work on affairs<\/span>.
              \n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

              This hexagram is linked with the twelfth month (January-February),
              \n<\/span><\/p>\n

              when, after the winter solstice,
              \n<\/span><\/p>\n

              the light power begins to ascend again.
              \n<\/span><\/p>\n

              THE JUDGMENT
              \n<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

              APPROACH has supreme success.
              \n<\/span><\/p>\n

              Perseverance furthers.
              \n<\/span><\/p>\n

              When the eighth month<\/span> comes,
              \n<\/span><\/p>\n

              There will be misfortune.
              \n<\/span><\/p>\n

              The hexagram as a whole points to a time of joyous, hopeful progress<\/span>.
              \n<\/span><\/p>\n

              Spring<\/span> is approaching.
              \n<\/span><\/p>\n

              Joy and forbearance bring high and low<\/span> nearer together.
              \n<\/span><\/p>\n

              Success<\/span> is certain.
              \n<\/span><\/p>\n

              But we must work with determination and perseverance<\/span>
              \n<\/span><\/p>\n

              to make full use of the propitiousness<\/span> of the time.
              \n<\/span><\/p>\n

              And one thing more: spring does not last forever.<\/span>
              \n<\/span><\/p>\n

              In the eighth month<\/span> the aspects are reversed<\/span>.
              \n<\/span><\/p>\n

              Then only two strong, light lines are left; these
              \n<\/span><\/p>\n

              • do not advance but
                \n<\/span><\/li>\n
              • are in retreat (see next hexagram).
                \n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                We must take heed of this change in good time.<\/span>
                \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                If

                  we meet evil before it becomes reality \u2013
                  \n<\/span><\/div>\n

                  before it has even begun to stir \u2013
                  \n<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n

                • we can master it.

                  THE IMAGE
                  \n<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

                  The earth above the lake: The image of APPROACH.
                  \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                  Thus the superior man
                  \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                  • is inexhaustible In his will to teach, And
                    \n<\/span><\/li>\n
                  • without limits In his tolerance and protection of the people.
                    \n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                    The earth borders upon<\/span> the lake from above 1.
                    \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                    This symbolizes the approach and condescension of the man of higher position
                    \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                    to those beneath him.<\/span>
                    \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                    The two parts of the image indicate what his attitude<\/span> toward these people will be.
                    \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                      \n
                    • \n
                      Just as the lake is inexhaustible in depth,
                      \n<\/span><\/div>\n
                        \n
                      • so the sage is inexhaustible in his readiness to teach mankind,
                        \n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                        and
                        \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                          \n
                        • \n
                          just as the earth is boundlessly wide, sustaining and caring for all creatures on it,
                          \n<\/span><\/div>\n
                            \n
                          • so the sage sustains and cares for all people and excludes no part of humanity.
                            \n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                            THE LINES
                            \n<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

                            0 Nine in the second place means:
                            \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                            Joint approach.
                            \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                            Good fortune.
                            \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                            Everything furthers.
                            \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                              \n
                            • When the stimulus to approach comes from a high place, and
                              \n<\/span><\/li>\n
                            • when a man has the inner strength and consistency that need no admonition,
                              \n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                              good fortune will ensue.<\/span>
                              \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                              Nor need the future cause any concern.<\/span>
                              \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                              He is well aware
                              \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                              • that everything earthly is transitory, and
                                \n<\/span><\/li>\n
                              • that a descent follows upon every rise,
                                \n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                                but need not be confused by this universal law of fate.

                                Everything serves to further.<\/span>
                                \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                Therefore
                                \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                he will travel the paths of life
                                \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                • swiftly,
                                  \n<\/span><\/li>\n
                                • honestly, and
                                  \n<\/span><\/li>\n
                                • valiantly.

                                  Six in the fourth place means:
                                  \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                  Complete approach.
                                  \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                  No blame.
                                  \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                  While
                                  \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                    \n
                                  • the three lower lines indicate<\/span> rise to power and influence,
                                    \n<\/span><\/li>\n
                                  • \n
                                    the three upper lines show the attitude<\/span> of persons in higher position
                                    \n<\/span><\/div>\n

                                    toward<\/span> those of lower rank for whom they procure influence.

                                    Here is shown

                                                within the depths of the earth<\/span>

                                                makes man afraid,<\/span>

                                                but this fear of God is good,
                                                \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                                for joy and merriment can follow upon it.<\/span>

                                                When
                                                \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                                • a man has learned within his heart what fear and trembling mean,
                                                  \n<\/span><\/li>\n
                                                • he is safeguarded against any terror produced by outside influences.

                                                              • sets his life in order and

                                                              • searches his heart,
                                                                \n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                                                                lest it harbor any secret opposition to the will of God.

                                                                Thus
                                                                \n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                                                  \n
                                                                • reverence is the foundation of true culture.
                                                                  \n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
