style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Below\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0K&#8217;UN\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0THE RECEPTIVE, EARTH<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">The waters on the surface of the earth <span style=\"background-color: yellow;\">flow together<\/span> wherever they can,<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">as for example in the ocean,<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">where all the rivers come together.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Symbolically this connotes<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Verdana; background-color: yellow;\">holding together and<br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Verdana; background-color: yellow;\">the laws that regulate it.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">The same idea is suggested by the fact that<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">all the lines of the hexagram <span style=\"background-color: yellow;\">except<\/span> the fifth, the place of the ruler, are <span style=\"background-color: yellow;\">yielding<\/span>.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">The yielding lines hold together because they are influenced by<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">a man of <span style=\"background-color: yellow;\">strong will<\/span> in the leading position,<br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">a man who is their <span style=\"background-color: yellow;\">center<\/span> of union.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Moreover, this strong and guiding personality in turn <span style=\"background-color: yellow;\">holds together<\/span> with the others,<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">finding in them the <span style=\"background-color: yellow;\">complement<\/span> of his own nature.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\"><strong>THE JUDGMENT<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">HOLDING TOGETHER brings good fortune.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Inquire of the oracle once again<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Whether you possess <span style=\"background-color: yellow;\">sublimity, constancy, and perseverance<\/span>;<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Then there is no blame.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Those who are uncertain gradually join.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Whoever comes too late<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Meets with misfortune.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">What is required is that <span style=\"background-color: yellow;\">we unite with others<\/span>, in order that<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">all may <span style=\"background-color: yellow;\">complement and aid<\/span> one another through holding together.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">But such holding together calls for a <span style=\"background-color: yellow;\">central figure<\/span> around whom other persons may unite.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">To become a center of influence holding people together is a<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\"><span style=\"background-color: yellow;\">grave matter<\/span> and<br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">fraught with <span style=\"background-color: yellow;\">great responsibility<\/span>.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">It requires<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">greatness of spirit,<br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">consistency, and<br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">strength.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Therefore let him who wishes to gather others about him <span style=\"background-color: yellow;\">ask himself<\/span> whether he is equal to the undertaking,<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">for anyone attempting the task <span style=\"background-color: yellow;\">without a real calling for it<\/span><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">only makes confusion <span style=\"background-color: yellow;\">worse than<\/span> if no union at all had taken place.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">But when there is a <span style=\"background-color: yellow;\">real rallying point<\/span>,<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">those who at first are hesitant or uncertain <span style=\"background-color: yellow;\">gradually come in of their own accord<\/span>.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Late-comers must suffer the <span style=\"background-color: yellow;\">consequences<\/span>, for in holding together the question of the right time is also important.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\"><span style=\"background-color: yellow;\">Relationships are formed and firmly established according to definite inner laws.<\/span><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\"><span style=\"background-color: yellow;\">Common experiences<\/span> strengthen these ties, and he who comes too late to share in these basic experiences must suffer for it if, as a straggler, he finds the door <span style=\"background-color: yellow;\">locked<\/span>.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana; background-color: yellow;\">If a man<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Verdana; background-color: yellow;\">has recognized the necessity for union and<br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Verdana; background-color: yellow;\">does not feel strong enough to function as the center,<br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\"><span style=\"background-color: yellow;\">it is his duty to become a member of some other organic fellowship.<\/span><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\"><strong>THE IMAGE<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">On the earth is water: The image Of HOLDING TOGETHER.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Thus the kings of antiquity<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\"><span style=\"background-color: yellow;\">Bestowed<\/span> the different states as fiefs And<br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\"><span style=\"background-color: yellow;\">cultivated<\/span> friendly relations With the feudal lords.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Water<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\"><span style=\"background-color: yellow;\">fills<\/span> up all the empty places on the earth and<br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\"><span style=\"background-color: yellow;\">clings<\/span> fast to it.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">The social organization of ancient China was based on this principle of the holding together of<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">dependents and<br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">rulers.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\"><span style=\"background-color: yellow;\">Water flows to unite with water, because all parts of it are subject to the same laws.<\/span><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">So too should human society <span style=\"background-color: yellow;\">hold together<\/span> through a community of interests that<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\"><span style=\"background-color: yellow;\">allows<\/span> each individual to feel himself a member of a whole.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana; background-color: yellow;\">The central power of a social organization must see to it that<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\"><span style=\"background-color: yellow;\">every member finds that his true interest lies in holding together with it,<\/span><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">as was the case in the paternal relationship between king and vassals in ancient China.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\"><strong>THE LINES<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana; text-decoration: underline;\">Six at the beginning means:<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Hold to him in truth and loyalty;<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">This is without blame.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Truth, like a full earthen bowl:<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Thus in the end<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Good fortune comes from without.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\"><span style=\"background-color: yellow;\">Fundamental sincerity is the only proper basis for forming relationships.<\/span><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">This attitude,<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">symbolized by a full earthen bowl, in which the <span style=\"background-color: yellow;\">content is everything and the empty form nothing<\/span>,<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">shows itself<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">not in <span style=\"background-color: yellow;\">clever words<\/span> but<br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">through <span style=\"background-color: yellow;\">the strength<\/span> of what lies within the speaker.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">This <span style=\"background-color: yellow;\">strength is so great<\/span> that it has power to attract good fortune to itself from without.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana; text-decoration: underline;\">Six in the second place means:<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Hold to him inwardly.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Perseverance brings good fortune.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">If a person responds<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">perseveringly and<br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">in the right way<br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">to the <span style=\"background-color: yellow;\">behests from above<\/span> that summon him to <span style=\"background-color: yellow;\">action<\/span>,<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">his relations with others are <span style=\"background-color: yellow;\">intrinsic<\/span> and<br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">he does <span style=\"background-color: yellow;\">not lose<\/span> himself.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">But<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">if a man seeks association with others as if he were an <span style=\"background-color: yellow;\">obsequious office hunter<\/span>,<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">he throws himself <span style=\"background-color: yellow;\">away<\/span>.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\"><span style=\"background-color: yellow;\">He does not follow the path of the superior man, who never loses his dignity.<\/span><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana; text-decoration: underline;\">Six in the third place means:<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">You hold together with the <span style=\"background-color: yellow;\">wrong<\/span> people.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">We are often among people who <span style=\"background-color: yellow;\">do not belong<\/span> to our own sphere.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">In that case we must beware of being drawn into <span style=\"background-color: yellow;\">false intimacy<\/span> through force of habit.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Needless to say, this would have <span style=\"background-color: yellow;\">evil consequences<\/span>.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Maintaining <span style=\"background-color: yellow;\">sociability without intimacy<\/span> is the only right attitude toward such people,<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">because otherwise<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">we should <span style=\"background-color: yellow;\">not be free<\/span> to enter into relationship with people of <span style=\"background-color: yellow;\">our own kind<\/span> later on.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana; text-decoration: underline;\">Six in the fourth place means:<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Hold to him outwardly also.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Perseverance brings good fortune.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Here the relations with a man who is the center of union are <span style=\"background-color: yellow;\">well established<\/span>.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Then we may, and indeed we should<span style=\"background-color: yellow;\">, show our attachment openly<\/span>.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">But we must<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\"><span style=\"background-color: yellow;\">remain<\/span> constant and<br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\"><span style=\"background-color: yellow;\">not allow<\/span> ourselves to be led astray.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana; text-decoration: underline;\">0 Nine in the fifth place means:<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Manifestation of holding together.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">In the hunt the king uses beaters on three sides only<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">And foregoes game that runs off in front.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">The citizens need no warning.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Good fortune.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">In the royal hunts of ancient China it was customary to drive up the game from three sides,<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">but on the fourth the animals had a chance to run off.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">If they failed to do this<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">they had to pass through a gate behind which the king stood ready to shoot.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Only animals that entered here were shot;<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">those that ran off in front were permitted to escape.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">This custom accorded with a kingly attitude;<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">the royal hunter did not wish to turn the chase into a slaughter,<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">but held that the kill should consist only of those animals which had so to speak<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">voluntarily exposed themselves.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">There is depicted here a ruler, or influential man, to whom people are <span style=\"background-color: yellow;\">attracted<\/span>.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Those who come to him he accepts,<br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">those who do not come are allowed to go their own way.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">He <span style=\"background-color: yellow;\">invites<\/span> none, flatters none &#8211; all come of their own free will.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">In this way there develops a <span style=\"background-color: yellow;\">voluntary dependence<\/span> among those who hold to him.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">They do not have to be constantly on their guard but <span style=\"background-color: yellow;\">may express<\/span> their opinions openly.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Police measures are not necessary, and they cleave to their ruler of their own volition.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">The same principle of freedom is valid for life in general.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\"><span style=\"background-color: yellow;\">We should not woo favor from people.<\/span><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">If a man cultivates within himself<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">the purity and<br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">the strength<br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">that are necessary for one who is the center of a fellowship,<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">those who are meant for him come <span style=\"background-color: yellow;\">of their own accord.<\/span><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana; text-decoration: underline;\">Six at the top means:<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">He finds no head for holding together.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Misfortune.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana; background-color: yellow;\">The head is the beginning.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\"><span style=\"background-color: yellow;\">If the beginning is not right, there is no hope of a right ending.<\/span><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">If we<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">have <span style=\"background-color: yellow;\">missed<\/span> the right moment for union and<br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">go on <span style=\"background-color: yellow;\">hesitating<\/span> to give complete and full devotion,<br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">we shall <span style=\"background-color: yellow;\">regret<\/span> the error when it is too late.<br
