Above        <\/span>K’AN  <\/span>THE ABYSMAL, WATER<\/font><\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

Below        <\/span>        <\/span>K’UN  <\/span>THE RECEPTIVE, EARTH<\/font><\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/font><\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

The waters<\/font><\/span> on the surface of the earth flow together<\/font><\/span> wherever they can, as for example in the ocean, where all<\/font><\/span> the rivers come together.  <\/span>Symbolically this connotes holding together<\/font><\/span> and the laws that regulate<\/font><\/span> it.  <\/span>The same idea is suggested by the fact that all the lines<\/font><\/span> of the hexagram except the fifth, the place of the ruler, are yielding<\/font><\/span>.  <\/span>The yielding lines hold together<\/font><\/span> because they are influenced<\/font><\/span> by a man of strong will in the leading position<\/font><\/span>, a man who is their center of union<\/font><\/span>.  <\/span>Moreover, this strong and guiding personality<\/font><\/span> in turn holds together<\/font><\/span> with the others, <\/font>finding in them the complement of his own nature.<\/font><\/span><\/font><\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

THE JUDGMENT<\/font><\/font><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

 <\/font><\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

HOLDING TOGETHER brings good fortune. <\/font><\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

Inquire of the oracle once again <\/font><\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

Whether you possess sublimity, constancy, and perseverance; <\/font><\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

Then there is no blame.<\/font>  <\/font><\/span><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

Those who are uncertain gradually join. <\/font><\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

Whoever comes too late <\/font><\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

Meets with misfortune.<\/font><\/font><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/font><\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

What is required<\/font><\/span> is that we unite with others<\/font><\/span>, in order that all may complement and aid<\/font><\/span> one another through holding together<\/font><\/span>.  <\/span>But such holding together calls for a central figure<\/font><\/span> around whom other persons may unite<\/font><\/span>.  <\/span>To become a center of influence holding people together is a grave matter and fraught with great responsibility<\/font><\/span>.  <\/span>It requires greatness of spirit, consistency, and strength.<\/font><\/span>  <\/span>Therefore let him who wishes to gather others about him ask himself<\/font><\/span> whether he is equal to the undertaking<\/font><\/span>, for anyone attempting the task without a real calling<\/font><\/span> for it only makes confusion worse<\/font><\/span> than if no union at all had taken place.<\/font><\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/font><\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

But when there is a real rallying point<\/font><\/span>, those who at first are hesitant or uncertain gradually come<\/font><\/span> in of their own accord.  <\/span>Late-comers<\/font><\/span> must suffer the consequences, for in holding together the question of the right time<\/font><\/span> is also important.  <\/span>Relationships<\/font><\/span> are formed and firmly established according to definite inner laws.  <\/span>Common experiences<\/font><\/span> strengthen these ties, and he who comes too late to share in these basic experiences must suffer for it if, as a straggler, he finds<\/font><\/span> the door locked.<\/font><\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

If a man has recognized<\/font><\/span> the necessity for union and does not feel<\/font><\/span> strong enough to function as the center, it is his duty to become<\/font><\/span> a member of some other organic fellowship.<\/font><\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

THE IMAGE<\/font><\/font><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

 <\/font><\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

On the earth is water:  <\/span>The image Of HOLDING TOGETHER. <\/font><\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

Thus the kings of antiquity <\/font><\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

Bestowed the different states as fiefs <\/font><\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

And cultivated friendly relations <\/font><\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

With the feudal lords.<\/font><\/font><\/span> <\/font><\/span><\/font><\/font><\/p>\n

 <\/font><\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

Water fills up<\/font><\/font><\/span> all the empty places on the earth and clings fast<\/font><\/span> to it.  <\/span>The social organization<\/font><\/span> of ancient China was based on this principle of the holding together<\/font><\/span> of dependents and rulers.  <\/span>Water flows<\/font><\/span> to unite with water, because all parts of it<\/font><\/span> are subject to the same laws.  <\/span>So too<\/font><\/span> should human society hold together through a community of interests that allows each individual to feel himself a member of a whole<\/font><\/span>.  <\/span>The central power of a social organization<\/font><\/span> must see to it that every member<\/font><\/span> finds that his true interest<\/font><\/span> lies in holding together with it, as was the case in the paternal relationship between king and vassals in ancient China. <\/font><\/span><\/font><\/font><\/p>\n

Hold to him in truth and loyalty;<\/font>  <\/font><\/span><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

This is without blame. <\/font><\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

Truth, like a full earthen bowl: <\/font><\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

Thus in the end <\/font><\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

Good fortune comes from without.<\/font><\/font><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Fundamental sincerity<\/font><\/font><\/span> is the only proper basis for forming relationships.  <\/span>This attitude, symbolized by a full earthen bowl, in which the content<\/font><\/span> is everything and the empty form<\/font><\/span> nothing, shows itself not in clever words<\/font><\/span> but through the strength of what lies within the speaker<\/font><\/span>.  <\/span>This strength is so great that it has power to attract good fortune to itself from without<\/font><\/span>. <\/font><\/span><\/font><\/font><\/p>\n

Six in the fourth place means: <\/font><\/font><\/span><\/u><\/p>\n

Here the relations with a man who is the center of union<\/font><\/span> are well established.  <\/span>Then we may, and indeed we should, show our attachment<\/font><\/span> openly.  <\/span>But we must remain constant and not allow<\/font><\/span> ourselves to be led astray.<\/font><\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

Below        <\/span>        <\/span>CHEN <\/span>THE AROUSING, THUNDER<\/font><\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/font><\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

The trigram Tui, the Joyous, whose attribute is gladness<\/font><\/span>, is above; Chen, the Arousing, which has the attribute of movement,<\/font><\/span> is below.  <\/span>Joy in movement induces following<\/font><\/span>.  <\/span>The Joyous is the youngest daughter, while the Arousing is the eldest son.  <\/span>An older man defers to<\/font><\/span> a young girl and shows her consideration<\/font><\/span>.  <\/span>By this he moves her to follow him<\/font><\/span>. <\/font><\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/font><\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

THE JUDGMENT<\/font><\/font><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

 <\/font><\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

FOLLOWING has supreme success.<\/font>  <\/font><\/span><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

Perseverance furthers.<\/font>  <\/font><\/span><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

No blame.<\/font><\/font><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/font><\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

In order to obtain a following<\/font><\/span> one must first know how to adapt<\/font><\/span> oneself.  <\/span>If a man would rule he must first learn to serve, for only in this way does he secure from those below him the joyous assent that is necessary if they are to follow him<\/font><\/span>.  <\/span>If he has to obtain a following by force or cunning, by conspiracy or by creating factions<\/font><\/span>, he invariably arouses resistance<\/font><\/span>, which obstructs<\/font><\/span> willing adherence.  <\/span>But even joyous movement can lead to evil consequences,<\/font><\/span> hence the added stipulation, "Perseverance furthers"-that is, consistency in doing right<\/font><\/span> – together with "No blame." Just as we should not ask others to follow us unless this condition is fulfilled, so it is only under this condition that we can in turn follow others without coming to harm<\/font><\/span>.<\/font><\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

The thought of obtaining a following through adaptation to the demands of the time is a great and significant idea;<\/font><\/font><\/span> this is why the appended judgment is so favorable.<\/font><\/span><\/font><\/font><\/p>\n

 <\/font><\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

THE IMAGE<\/font><\/font><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

 <\/font><\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

Thunder in the middle of the lake:  <\/span>The image of FOLLOWING. <\/font><\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

Thus the superior man at nightfall <\/font><\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

Goes indoors for rest and recuperation.<\/font><\/font><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/font><\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

In the autumn electricity withdraws<\/font><\/span> into the earth again and rests<\/font><\/span>.  <\/span>Here it is the thunder in the middle of the lake that serves as the image – thunder in its winter rest<\/font><\/span>, not thunder in motion.  <\/span>The idea of following in the sense of adaptation to the demands of the time<\/font><\/span> grows out of this image.<\/font>  <\/font><\/span><\/font><\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/font><\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

Thunder in the middle of the lake indicates times of darkness and rest<\/font><\/span>.  <\/span>Similarly, a superior man, after being tirelessly active all day, allows himself rest and recuperation at night.<\/font><\/span>  <\/span>No situation can become favorable until one is able to adapt to it<\/font><\/span> and <\/font>does not wear himself out with mistaken resistance.<\/font><\/span><\/font><\/font><\/span><\/p>\n
