HEXAGRAM 36 – Ming I – Darkening of the Light
Above K’UN THE RECEPTIVE, EARTH
Below LI THE CLINGING, FIRE
Here the sun
- has sunk under the earth and
- is therefore darkened.
The name of the hexagram means literally “wounding of the bright”; hence
the individual lines contain frequent references to wounding.
The situation is the exact opposite of that in the foregoing hexagram.
In the latter

a wise man at the head of affairs
- has able helpers, and in company with them
- makes progress;
- has able helpers, and in company with them

- is in a position of authority and
- brings harm to the wise and able man.

THE JUDGMENT
DARKENING OF THE LIGHT.
In adversity
It furthers one to be persevering.
One
-
must not unresistingly let himself be swept along
by unfavorable circumstances,
- nor permit his steadfastness to be shaken.
He can avoid this by
- maintaining his inner light, while
- remaining outwardly yielding and tractable.
With this attitude
he can overcome even the greatest adversities.
In some situations indeed a man
- must hide his light, in order to
- make his will prevail in spite of difficulties in his immediate environment.
Perseverance
- must dwell in inmost consciousness and
- should not be discernible from without.
Only thus is
a man able to maintain his will in the face of difficulties.
THE IMAGE
The light has sunk into the earth: The image of DARKENING OF THE LIGHT.
Thus does
- the superior man live with the great mass:

He
- veils his light,
- yet still shines.
- veils his light,
In a time of darkness it is essential to be
- cautious and
- reserved.
One should not needlessly awaken overwhelming enmity
by inconsiderate behavior.
In such times
- one ought not to fall in with the practices of others;
- neither should one drag them censoriously into the light.
In social intercourse
- one should not try to be all-knowing.
- One should let many things pass, without being duped.
THE LINES
Six in the fourth place means:
He penetrates the left side of the belly.
One
- gets at the very heart of the darkening of the light, And
- leaves gate and courtyard.
We
find ourselves close to the commander of darkness and so
discover his most secret thoughts.
In this way
- we realize that there is no longer any hope of improvement, and thus
- we are enabled to leave the scene of disaster before the storm breaks.
Six at the top means:
Not light but darkness.
- First he climbed up to heaven,
- Then he plunged into the depths of the earth.
Here the climax of the darkening is reached.
- The dark power at first held so high a place that
- it could wound all who were on the side of good and of the light.
But in the end
- it perishes of its own darkness,

- must itself fall at the very moment when

- consumed the energy to which it owed its duration.

MOVING HEXAGRAM
HEXAGRAM 30 – Li – THE CLINGING, FIRE

This hexagram is another double sign.
The trigram Li means
- ¨to cling to something,”
- “to be conditioned,
- to depend or rest on something,” and also
- “brightness”.
A dark line clings to two light lines,
- one above and
- one below –
the image of an empty space between two strong lines,
whereby the two strong lines are made bright.
The trigram represents the middle daughter.
The Creative has incorporated the central line of the Receptive, and thus
Li develops.
As an image, it is fire.
Fire
- has no definite form but
- clings to the burning object and thus
is bright.
As water pours down from heaven,
so fire flames up from the earth.
- While K’an means the soul shut within the body,
- Li stands for nature in its radiance.
THE JUDGMENT
THE CLINGING.
Perseverance furthers.
It brings success.
Care of the cow brings good fortune.
What is dark clings
- to what is light and so
- enhances the brightness of the latter.
A luminous thing giving out light
must have within itself something that perseveres; otherwise
it will in time burn itself out.
Everything that
gives light
is dependent on something to which it clings,
in order that it may continue to shine.
Thus
- sun and moon cling to heaven, and
- grain, grass, and trees cling to the earth.
So too
the twofold clarity of the dedicated man
- clings to what is right and thereby
- can shape the world.
Human life on earth is conditioned and unfree, and,
when man
- recognizes this limitation and
- makes himself dependent upon the harmonious and beneficent forces of the cosmos,
he achieves success.
The cow is the symbol of extreme docility.
By cultivating in himself an attitude of
- compliance and
- voluntary dependence,
man
- acquires clarity without sharpness and
- finds his place in the world. 1
THE IMAGE
That which is bright rises twice: The image of FIRE.
Thus the great man, by perpetuating this brightness,
Illumines the four quarters of the world.
Each of the two trigrams represents the sun in the course of a day.
The two together represent the repeated movement of the sun,
the function of light with respect to time.
The great man continues the work of nature in the human world.
Through the clarity of his nature
he causes the light
- to spread farther and farther and
- to penetrate the nature of man ever more deeply.
